Miss Lettie Marshall Dent was appointed St. Mary's County's Superintendent of Schools on March 7, 1928. With her appointment, St. Mary's County acquired the distinction of having the first female Superintendent of Schools In the state of Maryland. Miss Dent served St. Mary's County with skill and distinction until her retirement in 1957.
Mrs. Lettie Marshall Dent Gough received her early schooling at Oakley School in the 7th District shortly after the turn of the century. She went on to graduate from St. Mary's Female Seminary in 1911 and then majored In history at Western Maryland College where she received her degree in June, 1915. After teaching history, English, and Latin at Baden High School. she returned to St. Mary's County in 1917 to become principal and teacher of the upper grades at River Springs School. She spent two more years out of the county, teaching history and French at Marlboro High School before returning to the county -- this time to stay. In the fall of 1921, "Miss Lettie" returned to River Springs School to become principal and teacher of high school classes there. She continued in that capacity until her appointment as Superintendent of St. Man's County Schools.
Her tenure as Superintendent was one of tremendous growth and change for St. Mary's County's school system. The years between 1928 and 1957 were marked by the replacement of the one-room schools with larger consolidated schools, the inauguration of the county high schools, the beginning of bus transportation, and tremendous growth in population during the 40's and 50's. The problems were many and varied. Mrs. Gough handled them with much good sense. The people of St. Mary's County endeavored to show their appreciation for her years of dedicated and expert service. In 1960 she was honored as St. Mary's County's Woman of the Year. The Lettie Marshall Dent Scholarship Fund, established and supported by St. Mary's Countians, has provided scholarship money for dozens of prospective teachers and thereby serves as a fitting monument to "Miss Letties" years of service to St. Mary's County.
