Suicide at the Rennert House--Death of Wm. O. Key by Morphia.
- There was a great sensation at the Rennert House yesterday morning by the discovery of the suicide of William Ogle Key, one of the well-known members of the Maryland family of that name, whose dead body was found in bed by his room-mate, John T. Stoddert, when he awoke about eight o'clock.
- Mr. Stoddert is from St. Mary's County, Md., where Mr. Key had lived also. They had been companions together very much of late. When he woke up he found Key was dead, and hastened to inform Mr. Rennert of the circumstances. The police were notified, and Dr. Walker, coroner, informed, who summoned a jury, L. E. Ballard, foreman.
- The room occupied by Key and Stoddert is on the third floor. There were two beds, one facing the door and the other on the left of the entrance, on which the body of the suicide lay, resting on its right side, in an easy position, with a champagne cork clenched in the right hand, while the other hung naturally by his side.
- Mr. Stoddert testified before the jury that Mr. Key and himself had been room-mates for some days past at the Rennert House. Last Saturday night they had been drinking a little; while on Baltimore Street Mr. Key went into Coleman & Rogers' drug store and purchased twelve one-quarter grain morphis pills. Witness loaning him $2 to pay for them. The attendant at the drug store, Smith M. Deavers, colored, did not wish to sell the morphine, but Mr. Key said his aunt, Mrs. Briscoe, would see they were properly administered. On Sunday morning Mr. Key, speaking to the witness, on several occasions spoke about committing suicide. He said he wanted Mr. Stoddert to purchase poison, as he had thrown the pills away.
- Mr. Key went to bed Sunday afternoon, and witness went out for an hour or two, and upon returning, at 8 P.M., found Mr. Key in his (Stoddert's) bed. Key looked strange, and witness having asked him what was the matter, he said "Good-bye John. I've committed suicide." Witness did not believe this, as Key had told him he had thrown away the pills. While deliberating over the matter Key jumped up, and staggering to his own bed, called for a drink which was brought to him.
- A colored waiter whom Key had promised to give some clothing reminded him of the promise and he said "Go away and wait until to-morrow and then you can have mine, for I won't need them any more."
- About a quarter before twelve o'clock the occupants of the room both went to their beds. Mr. McCormick, a friend, entering soon afterwards, looked at Key, and in response to Mr. Stoddert's suggestions of apprehensions for Key, said "He is only sleeping soundly and will no doubt feel better in the morning." Witness then fell asleep, but on awaking in the morning about eight o'clock, he observed the peculiar color of his friend's features. He touched his hand and on feeling its icy coldness became afraid and ran downstairs to tell the hotel people. He thought Key was dead but was afraid to convince himself of the fact.
- While Mr. Stoddert was giving his testimony, one of the jurymen, who stood at the foot of the bed upon which the corpse lay, became very faint and had to leave the room.
- Smith M. Deevers, the colored attendant in Coleman & Rogers' store, who is an experienced druggist and prescription clerk, was examined. Corroborating what Mr. Stoddert had said in regard to the purchase of the morphine pills on Saturday night. He added that he would not have sold the pills but for the promise that they would be handed over to Mrs. Briscoe, or to the care of Mr. Stoddert. It was not the habit of the house to sell potent drugs indiscriminately, but it was customary to let old customers have what they called for. He had known Mr. Key for twenty years, and had known his father before him. He purchased 12 quarter grain morphis pills. The label showed the number of the pills, and the directions were "to be taken one every hour." It is supposed Key took them all at once. The pill box, which was empty, was found in the vest pocket of Key, with a note, written on a slip of paper as follows:
- "Sunday, October 29, 1874--I die in peace with mankind. I wish Dr. Smith, of Virginia, to take especial charge of the affections and cares of my poor and afflicted family. Wm. O. Key." [It was November 29, not October 29].
- The jury rendered a verdict of suicide by an excessive dose of morphia.
- Mr. Key was about forty-five years of age. He was the son of the late H. G. Sothoron Key, of Leonardtown, Md. He married Miss Coleman, an Alabama lady, and before the war owned an estate in Louisiana. He was in 1869 connected with the New York Hotel, in New York City. He had also been connected with the St. Charles Hotel, New Orleans. During the war he was a quartermaster, with the rank of major, in the Confederate service, and after the war resided for some time at Uniontown, Perry County, Alabama. He came to Baltimore a short while ago from Mobile. His father was the second cousin of Francis S. Key, author of the Star-Spangled Banner. (Reno* - The Baltimore [MD] Sun, published 1 Dec 1874)
