Key John [Male] b. ABT 1730 Maryland - d. AUG 1755
Occupation: Physician
Person ID: 1765

REBECCA JOWLES SOTHORON was born Bet. 1753 - 1763 in St. Mary's Co., MD to Henry Greenfield Sothoron & Mary Bond; and died Abt. 1794 in St. Mary's Co., MD. She married PHILIP B. KEY March 04, 1778 in All Faith Epis., Huntersville, St. Mary's Co., MD, son of JOHN KEY and CECELIA BROWN. He was born 1750 in St. Mary's Co., MD, and died January 04, 1820 in St. Mary's Co., MD. (Reno*)

Per Papenfuse*,Dr. John Key (?-1755) was the son of Philip Key (1696/97-1764) (see Notes for wife Cecelia's second husband, Thomas Bond).

** Biography (Fresco(2)* :148)

The Key family of St. Mary's Co. were of education, culture and wealth. Dr. John Key's father, Philip Key (1696-1764) was educated at the law school of the Middle Temple "in the old city" of London, and immigrated to St. Mary's Co. about 1720. He built an elegant manor house Bushwood Lodge in St. Clement's Manor which was destroyed by fire early in the 19th century. He married (1) Susanna Gardiner, daughter of John Gardiner and Mary Boarman, (2) Theodosia (Lawrence) Humphrey, widow of Reverend John Humphrey.

Dr. John Key, son of the first marriage, was probably born at Bushwood Lodge about 1730. He studied at Edinburgh, Scotland, and also under Dr. Gustavus Brown (1689-1762), who established a medical school at his home Rich Hill near Port Tobacco, in Charles Co., MD, and there he fell in love with one of Dr. Brown's nine fair daughters. When Dr. Brown heard of the love affair of his daughter Cecilia and his student John Key, he wrote to John's father that under the circumstances, he had better take his son, John, home again.

Apparently, Dr. Brown manifested opposition to all of the suitors of his daughters, so much so that one daughter, Elizabeth, eloped from his home at night through a second floor window while Dr. Brown's medical students gleefully held the ladder and lantern. Elizabeth married April 24, 1747 Dr. Michael Wallace (1719-1767). Dr. Brown mentioned in his will that on the marriage of all of his daughters, he required their husbands to deed to them the property they received from him as dower. In the early colonial period, women were not permitted to own property in their names if they had a husband; only widows and spinsters held property in their name. In the earliest wills, the father gives vast acreage to his sons and to his "loving daughters" a feather bed or a shilling.

Love had its way as Dr. John Key and Cecilia Brown did marry. However, Dr. Key died in August 1755 at the early age of 25 years, leaving two small children: Susanna Key and Philip Key II. Just four months later, Cecilia Brown Key's father, Dr. Gustavus Brown, made his will, devising 10,000 pounds of tobacco to her and her children.

Dr. John Key's son, Philip II (1750-1820) was educated at the Middle Temple Law School, London, was speaker of the House two terms and Member of the U.S. Congress 1791-1793. He loaned 500 pounds to the state toward defraying expenses of the Revolutionary War. He was co-owner with General Uriah Forrest of St. Mary's Co. and Georgetown, of the schooner Union, which traded between Baltimore and the West Indies. He owned 1133 acres in Chaptico (the whole was called Hamburg), 22 slaves and 50 ounces of silver. In 1796, he bought from Abraham Barnes, Tudor Hall, which is now owned by the St. Mary's Co. Historical Society. Philip Key II was twice married.
(1) 1778 Rebecca Jowles Sothoron, daughter of Henry Greenfield Sothoron and Mary Bond.
(2) 1796, Sophia Hall.

Dr. John Key's daughter, Susanna Gardiner Key, marr. July 18, 1773, Colonel Richard Bond.

Dr. John Key's widow, Cecilia Brown Key, b. 1731, married (2) Major Thomas Bond. She made her will (JJ-2:14) on March 8, 1791 which was proved February 6, 1892.
