Louis Gilliam immigrated from Antwerp, Belgium, about 1783 to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he settled and became the progenitor of generations of doctors and dentists.

His son, Jacob Gilliam (1784-1868) was a member of the Pennsylvania Militia during the War of 1812. While serving in MD, he met Ann Sothoron, daughter of Richard Sothoron and Catherine Tubman of St. Mary's Co., MD. They married October 10, 1813 at All Faith Episcopal Church near Charlotte Hall. Jacob amassed considerable wealth and was one of the founders of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences. Although he maintained his homes and dental practice in Philadelphia, he owned properties in St. Mary's Co. In 1828, he bought from his brother-in-law, William Sothoron, the old Sothoron home in Charlotte Hall: Sothoron's Desire 125 acres (bought from John Estep), Long Looked For Come At Last, 37 1/2 acres and other tracts. In 1835, Jacob purchased Half-Pone Farm near Sotterley on the Patuxent River. His son, Louis Say Gilliams lived there for many years. Ann Sothoron Gilliams died June 21, 1858 in Philadelphia and is buried there.

They lived at Half-Pone Point, attended St. Andrew's Episcopal Church until they left the county in 1860 for Camden, N. J. Another son of Jacob Gilliams, William Maclure, married Elizabeth Hawkins of Port Tobacco, Charles Co., MD. He bought Breton Bay Farm about 1844.

Dr. James Sothoron Gilliams, fourth son of Jacob and Ann Sothoron Gilliams, born ca. 1828, practiced medicine in Philadelphia; died September 12, 1898, unmarried.
