** Notes from Linda Reno
Note to me from Jim Clark: jamesclark@lanset.com, 1/14/2001:
At the present time, I haven't made a connection to this family but I hope to sometime in the future. My ancestor, Leonard Clark, b. abt. 1754 in NC or VA served in the Revolutionary War. I have found references to his service and know where he died, Pittsylvania Co., VA. This county is on the VA/NC border. He bought land there after his 2nd marriage. I found one of his son's there a little earlier. In checking the adjoining counties, I stumbled on a Leonard Clark in Granville Co. Everything, age, etc. seem to fit my Leonard. I found him in Wake Co. as early as 1784 and in Grandville Co., NC in 1785. I have him in Granville Co. through the 1790's and again in Wake Co., NC in 1800. He received a pension from the Federal Govt. for injuries he received during the Revolutionary War. He was held prisoner by the British in NY City and suffered severe frost bite. the house he was held prisoner in had no heat. I have found mention of him in several places, even on the INTERNET on the National Archives page, but when I contacted NARA and sent in the information I had, they came up empty handed. His application for pension must exist somewhere and this in turn should tell me where he came from.
A few days ago, a party contacted me and told me that Leonard Clark of St. Mary's Co., Md. had a son, Charles Sotheron Clark who migrated to Granville Co., NC. Earlier, I found a mention of Leonard and Charles Clark in Granville Co., NC as per: Abstracts of wills and estate records, Granville Co., NC 31 Mar 1789 Leonard Clark to George Alston for 60 pds., negro. wit: Charles Clark, Robert Reid. Bk 2, p. 131.
Jonathan Johnston will............wit: Charles Clark......Nancy Clark.
Feb Court 1796 Leonard Clark indicted for stealing certain implements from Thomas Parham and products found in possession of William Hargrave Searcy who is willing to give it to Parham; trial ends here. ----- Leonard Clarke, Private, U.S. Rifle Corps. Placed on pension 8/12/1814; pension began 1/18/1814; died 8/3/1830. Resident of Pittsylvania Co., VA. "Statement of Invalid Pensions in VA", CD #145 (Rev. War Pensions).
Leonard Clark stated in a petition to the General Assembly that he enlisted in the Continental Service in 1776 for 3 years; that he was captured and held prisoner in a house in New York City without a fire and as a result of his sufferings, has lost the use of one of his limbs. (History of Pittsylvania Co., VA by Maud Carter Clement).
His first wife was Mary Messers whom he married, probably about 1776, possibly in Wake Co., NC.
1784, he was in Wake Co., NC; 1785-1786 and in Granville Co., NC 8/1786-1796.
8/1786: Deed from John Duncan to Leonard Clark for 150 ac. proved by Zach Higgs.
On 1/18/1798, Leonard Clark m. Mary Burgess in Pittsylvania Co., VA (dau. of William Burgess, who consents). Mary Burgess was his second wife. On 12/25/1798, he bought 55 ac. bounded by Edward Burgess. On 9/5/1805, the Overseers of the Poor for Camden Parish at the Pittsylvania Courthouse contributed to Leonard Clark for his "support". He is supposed to have had a son named Edward Burgess Clark (see Smith Co., TN 1830 census) who moved to MS.
He appears on tax lists for Pittsylvania Co., VA 1810; 1811; 1812; and 1813 as exempt from taxes.
U.S. House of Representatives, Saturday, 1/22/1814. Ordered that the petition of Leonard Clark which was presented on 12/15/1812 be referred to Committee.
He had a son named Leonard, Jr. who moved to Smith Co., TN as did another son named John. ___ Linda,
We're sorry to be so long in getting back to you. It looks like you already know the information from the government records. The prison in New York sounds like it could have been the Sugar House. A window from the building survives and is near City Hall in New York. I hope to be able to get into the library at Frances Tavern Museum within a few weeks. I'll look for more information on the British prisons, but I don't think it is likely that I would find something specific on Leonard Clark, although it is possible. I'll let you know what I find.
