Dr. Joseph Ford Shaw was the son of Reverend Neale Hammill Shaw and Ann Ford. His father was professor at Charlotte Hall Military Academy 1799-1828. Dr. Shaw was born about 1800 at Shaw's Retreat, the ancestral home one mile south of Charlotte Hall.
After attending Charlotte Hall Military Academy, he received his medical degree in 1827 at the University of Pennsylvania.
He was a preceptor to Dr. George Frederick Adams, who received his medical degree in 1853. Dr. Shaw was a member of the Maryland Assembly in 1838-1839.
On January 22, 1834, Dr. Shaw married Rebecca, daughter of John Caleb Thomas and Priscilla Anderson, and widow of Joshua Estep.
They had these children:
- John Edward F., eldest child, died age 21, on January 5, 1857 at the residence of his uncle, Charles F. Shaw in Charles Co., MD and was buried at his father's forest home.
- Joseph Ford, b. ca. 1840, became a public school teacher, marr. Elizabeth Jane Forbes.
- Fantelina, b. October 9, 1842, marr. January 17, 1871, James William Thomas (1840-1901).
There were two step-children: John C. Estep and Joshua T. Estep.
Dr. Joseph Ford Shaw died suddenly of apoplexy at Charlotte Hall on September 3, 1865, age about 65.
His widow, Rebecca, was buried June 22, 1866 age about 60, beside her husband at All Faith Episcopal Church, near Charlotte Hall.
