The St. Mary's Beacon of December 8, 1892, stated that Dr. William Bruce Locke's granddaughter, Laura Mason Burroughs, wife of Frank Neale Holmes, brought suit in court against the trustees of Charlotte Hall School to recover a tract of land, occupied by the principal of the school, of 7 1/2 acres known as Spring Garden or Smith's Lot.
In 1833, Dr. William B. Locke sold it to Louisa Estep. The land had been given to his wife by her father, Charles Somerset Smith. Mary Locke, the wife, had positively refused to sign the deed. (Fresco(2)* :162)
