August Von Millard died 7 Sept 2014 in Virginia. (Gough
- 27 September 2014. Captain August von Born Millard, USN-Ret., of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, after about a month's illness. - As long-time NIP/NiF stalwart Sid Wood recalls, "Von was a 1630 officer who served under Capt Dean Cullison and with me on the NAVEUR staff in London in the late 70s. He was also Naval Attache in both Helsinki and New Delhi.” - Von had a remarkable career, which will be remembered across our Community. He spent more time living outside the U.S. than inside since graduating from his beloved Saint Paul's prep school in Maryland. "Von” spent his first 30 professional years in Naval Intelligence. - After active duty, he worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development in both India and Nepal; directed emergency management programs in Northern and Central Europe; and taught English to disadvantaged kids in Casablanca- where he also introduced them to lacrosse, which he described as "wildly popular” there). Von was peripatetic, and volunteered with the Public Diplomacy Section at the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan, a former republic of the Soviet Union. - Von's prior assignments in uniform included stints as Senior or Deputy Intelligence Officer at various commands, including an Operational Special Warfare Team and on the staff of the Director of Naval Intelligence. He served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence of U.S. Naval Forces in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean, now known as the U.S. Fifth Fleet. He managed a Task Force of roughly 350 Navy and civilian men and women who provided specialized intelligence support to naval fleet operations. * Von also helped coordinate and manage overseas Presidential visits (Bush One in Finland, Clinton in Prague) and in 2008 landed a senior-staff position on the McCain presidential campaign. He helped brief various Secretaries of Defense, Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Chiefs of Naval Operations and the National Security Council Staff and their principal deputies, as well as numerous General and Flag Officers. * Early in his career Von was an intelligence analyst for operations covering the Dominican Republic, the intelligence analyst for Special Operations teams in Vietnam and the Aviation Recon Officer for naval operations at the end of the Vietnam War. During that war, Von and a colleague created and initiated operations that identified the North Vietnamese supply system and attacked it. - This led to a spectacular series of air strikes on North Vietnamese convoys in late 1972, further pressuring North Vietnamese leaders to begin serious negotiations with the U.S. that in turn led to the cease fire and the release of the U.S. prisoners of war. * These duties have over the years garnered Von some impressive accolades: a Legion of Merit (awarded by the Secretary of the Navy), a Bronze Star (for his work in Vietnam noted above), two Defense Meritorious Service Medals, the Joint Services Commendation Medal, two Naval Commendation Medals, five Unit Commendations and the Combat Action Ribbon (also for Vietnam). He's received recognition from two foreign governments, winning a Republic of Vietnam Medal of Honor First Class and the Commander of the White Rose, from Finland, of which he's especially proud. - Von and his wife, Elisabeth, a political officer in the U.S. Senior Foreign Service, have five children and four grandchildren. - His energy and commitment will be greatly missed. There will be a memorial service at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church (228 South Pitt Street - Alexandria, VA 22314) at 1100 on Saturday 4 October. ("Naval Intelligence Professionals" web site)

Raymond Edmond Burke and Unknown Burke Baby
These two infants are the children of Dr. Thomas Somervell Burke and his wife Louise B. Burke. Doctor Burke was a native of Mississippi who for many years had charge of the quarantine station at Aransas Pass where he would share duty with doctors like Alexander Hamilton (also buried in Old Bayview Cemetery along with T. S. Burke). Hamilton was in partnership with Dr. Spohn whose sister was the wife of Dr. Hamilton. Dr. Burke was active in the Episcopal church and the Knights of Honor. His wife Louise B. reports in census records that she is a native of Kentucky as well as her parents. In the 1870 census (Calhoun County, p. 375A/sheet 17) the doctor and his family reside in Lavaca near Indianola-another port that was subject to quarantines because of yellow fever. However, it may have been the 1875 hurricane that encouraged the doctor to move his family south to Corpus Christi where they are found in the 1880 census (Nueces County, ED 116, sheet 9B) since little Raymond Edmond died in 1877 when the family was already in Corpus Christi. Little Raymond died when about one and a half years old, while the other unknown infant probably was unnamed because the little child is listed as dying the same day he or she was born, possibly indicating the infant was stillborn. Another son of Dr. and Mrs. Burke--Holloway Burke--also may be buried in Old Bayview Cemetery with the other family members since Holloway died in a drowning accident in the ship channel in July of 1883 at the age of 17 years old. Mrs. Lou B. Burke continued to reside in Corpus Christi into the 1900s and is found in early city directories living with another son, Dr. Henry S. Burke (he is listed as "Henry” in the 1870 census and "Sothoron” in the 1880 census). In the 1907-8 and 1913-14 city directories they reside on Mesquite Street, and in 1915-16 they are on Leopard Street. While Dr. H. S. Burke appears again in the 1919 city directory, his mother is not listed so she probably died between 1916 and 1919. The fact that the oldest son is named "Holloway” and that Tito Rivera (also in Old Bayview Cemetery) is called his "uncle” seems to indicate that Mrs. Louise Burke's maiden name is "Holloway”. Tito Rivera was married to Mollie Holloway at Port Lavaca on October 12, 1870 so it appears that Mollie and Louise were sisters.
