Thomas James [Male] b. 11 MAR 1785 "Delabrooke", Mechanicsville, St. Mary's Co., MD - d. 25 DEC 1845 St. Mary's Co., MD
Occupation: Physician
Person ID: 1425

** Biography (Fresco(2)* :254)

Dr. James Thomas of Deep Falls, twenty-sixth governor of Maryland, was born at De La Brooke Manor, St. Mary's Co., MD on March 11, 1785, son of Major William Thomas, Jr., and Catherine Brooke Boarman, heiress of De La Brooke Manor. He was brother of Dr. William Thomas (1793-1849).

Deep Falls is one of the few estates which has been owned by a single family since the earliest days of the colony. It was patented in 1680 as Wales to Thomas Thomas. When Dr. James Thomas' grandparents, Major William Thomas and Elizabeth Reeves, built the manor house that stands today, the rear of it was landscaped into five long terraces or "falls", and the name was changed from Wales to Deep Falls. A pre-Revolutionary cemetery also survived.

After receiving his education at Charlotte Hall Military Academy in St. Mary's Co. and at St. John's College, Annapolis, Dr. James Thomas earned his medical degree in 1807 from Philadelphia Medical College.

In 1820, Dr. Thomas was elected to the General Assembly. Beginning 1826, he was state senator for five years. State governors were then elected annually by the legislature. In 1833, he was elected Governor of Maryland and was re-elected in 1834. Dr. Thomas owned many large tracts of land in upper Newtown and according to tax lists, had 56 slaves.

On January 25, 1808, Dr. Thomas married his cousin, Elizabeth Courts. They had seven children, but only two carried on the lineage. Their children were: William Henry, 1808-1814.
- Elizabeth, 1811-1888, d. age 77, unmarr.
- Henry William, 1814-1878, d. age 64, unmarr.
- Ann Maria, b. 1817, marr. 1838, Dr. James Waring.
- Catherine, 1822-1823.
- James Richard, 1826-1885, marr. 1854, Jeannette E. Briscoe.
- George Presley, 1831-1832.

The two children who carried on the lineage were a daughter, Ann Maria, who married Dr. James Waring, lived in the Chaptico district and had nine children. A son, James Richard Thomas and his wife, Jeannette Briscoe, had eight children including a son, James Walter Thomas (1855-1926), author of "Chronicles of Colonial Maryland" and their daughter, Emeline, from whom the Bromes and Howards of St. Mary's City are descended.

Dr. James Thomas died on Christmas Day in 1845. His funeral is registered in the vestry minutes of All Saints Episcopal Church at Oakley, St. Mary's Co. and he is buried at Deep Falls. Near his monument is that of his wife, Eliza Courts Thomas.
