** Biography (Fresco(2)* :101)

Dr. Henry A. Ford was born ca. 1813, son of Lewis Ford (c. 1782-1823) and his second wife, Simphrosa Hill. His father had married (1) Elizabeth Plowden, daughter of Edmund Plowden of Bushwood Manor and Janet Hamersley of Bachelor's Hope. Dr. Ford was the brother of Dr. Joseph Ford and Louisa Ford, who was married to Dr. Thomas Jefferson Stone.
- Dr. Ford was educated at Georgetown College, then received his degree in medicine in 1843 at the University of MD School of Medicine, Baltimore. He settled near Leonardtown, St. Mary's Co. to practice.
- On May 27, 1845, Dr. Ford married Jane Adelia Thomas, daughter of Dr. William Thomas and his wife Elizabeth Tubman, at the home of Dr. Thomas Jefferson Stone. Jane was not born a Catholic but was baptized ca. 1850 at Medley Neck Catholic Church. Dr. and Mrs. Ford lived at Oak-Lee, about one mile south of Leonard-town, a part of Hanover (also known as St. Lawrence Freehold). The site is now Fenwick Motor Co. and St. Mary's Co. Technical School. Jane Thomas Ford was conducting a private school at Oak-Lee beginning 1870.
- Dr. and Mrs. Ford had six children. They were:
--- Elizabeth Lansdale (c. 1848-1907), unmarr.
--- Rosa Hill (c. 1849/50-1928), unmarr.
--- Lewis (1852-1893), unmarr.
--- William Henry (1854-1893), unmarr.
--- Ann Mary (c. 1857-1898), marr. William F. Greenwell.
--- Maria Louisa (b. 1859/60-1939), marr. Walter Hanson Stone Briscoe.
- The Beacon of July 26, 1894 gives an interesting speculation: "While George Edgar Smith of St. Mary's City section was cultivating his field of tobacco on July 19, 1894, the cultivator turned up a small silver case. Inside were two thumb lancets (small, pointed, surgical knife, usually two-edged), one of which had partly succumbed to the corroding truth of time. The handles were tortoise shell and are in perfect state of preservation. On the obverse side of the case is inscribed "T. T. Fillell (Fiddis?), M. D." to and of the reverse side "H. A. Ford, M.D." The field is known as the "mustering ground". Could the silver case have belonged to this Dr. H. A. Ford?
- Dr. Henry A. Ford died November 14, 1891 age 78. His widow, Jane Adelia (Thomas) Ford, born July 12, 1819, died January 3, 1882 age 63, buried at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

ST. MARY'S COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT (Equity Papers) Dates:1858. 476: James F. Abell vs. James T. Blakistone. Mortgage foreclosure on Scotch Neck. Accession No,: 19,731-494; MSA* No.: C 1592-83; Location: 1/57/9/67. 10/5/1857-- James T. Blakistone sells Scotch Neck 504 acres, lying on Patuxent River bound by Cockold Creek to James F. Abell for $2,500 and also negroes: Jacob 53, George 53, Mendockes 26, Tom 21, Aloysius 22, Henryn16, John 14, Dick 12, Phil 10, Milly 40, Clarissa 28, Cecy 19, Maaniok 15, Abell 7. 10/8/1858-Proceedings that James T. Blakistone shall have bond $2530. Witn: James T. Blakistone, Zacheus & Thomas Tippette( sic)

2/25/1867: James T. Blakistone, petitioner for the benefit of the insolvent laws of Md. provides a schedule of his real estate. "Burdette's Neck", 152 ac. and one warehouse on or near the wharf at Leonardtown. James S. Downs appointed his trustee and filed bond in the amount of $20,000 with Robert C. Combs, James F. Abell, and Henry G. S. Key. Blakistone conveyed the property to Downs. Hon. Judge Brent refused to sit on the case on the ground of consanguinity and James H. Wilson was appointed in his place.

It was stated that on June 1 last, the afsd. James Downs, trustee and a certain Henry H. Owings, purchaser of the real estate mentioned in these proceedings under and by virtue of a decree of the sd. court sitting as a Court of Equity in the case of Henry A. Didier, Admin. of E. Didier and others vs. James T. Blakistone, #534 Equity comes into court in sd. case and prays that the sale made thereunder by J. Shaaf Stockett, Esq., trustee be set aside on the ground that the judgement creditors were not made parties to the case and thereby suffered loss and injury and that further that the land sold by Stockett would have brought a much larger price if sd. judgement creditors had been made parties by the complainant in this case.

6/17/1867: The court ordered that the sale made by Stockett be set aside and revoked and Downs was authorized to sell it again.

10/1/1867: Downs reported that on 8/6/1867 he had offered "Scotch Neck", 352 ac. (note that this is not any of the property named above) for sale and it was bought by John Stewart of the City of New York for $5,000. Stewart paid 1/3 part of the purchase money, but has failed to give his note for the balance and has since died. Notice has been given to Stewart's representatives, but they refuse to comply with the terms of the sale. Downs was authorized to resell "Scotch Neck".

10/14/1867: Downs reported the sale of "Burdett's Neck" on 8/6/1867 for $2,625 to John Parsons.

10/30/1867: Downs reported the sale of "Scotch Neck" to John B. Abell for $4,600.

5/14/1869: $6,176.54 shown as balance after expenses. To: William Floyd for purchase money on "Burdett Neck" with interest to date. To: Joseph H. Key, assignee of J. M. Briscoe, admin. of P.P. Smith, assignee of Wm. McCann, judgement with interest and costs, $455.30. (Note: This is probably Josiah McKay Biscoe) To: Vestry of St. Andrew's Parish, balance of judgement with interest and costs, $545.25. To: Henry H. Owings, assignee of Edmund Didier, mortgagee in part payment of mortgage, $4,069.89.

From Tom Jennings

Col James Thomas Blakistone. The Col comes from Nannie Blackistone Notebook. The story goes: About 1816 John Colton came to live in the neighborhood and liked to play cards. Thomas must have been a real dumb head as it is said that he sat in front of a large mantel mirror and John kept reading his cards. Thomas lost his hat and ass. All personal property, horses, land and house. All hands had to scatter and live where they could find a roof. The affair was considered a great tragic event.(Well- I would guess so.) There is a Mrs Addie Blackistone Custer whose father was Henry Herbert Blackistone-a son of Nehemiah's #2 marriage and lived at Longworth Pt when the place was lost at cards told stories from her father of the terrible times. But in the end all was well-the Blackistones and Coltons intermarried. (From Dave Cummins).

** From Abell* (2:61)

James Thomas Blakiston, son of George and Rebecca (Goldsmith) Blakiston, was a lawyer, and one of the most prominent men in the business and political life of St. Mary's county. He married, in November, 1840, Ann, daughter of Dr. William Thomas, of Cremona, St. Mary's county, and Eliza, his wife, daughter of Henry and Mary (Sothoron) Tubman. The death of Colonel Blakiston was widely and sincerely mourned as that of a man admirable in all the relations of life.
