Sewell Maria [Female] b. MAR 1784 - d. AFT 1800
Person ID: 116

Charles S. & Maria Sewall vs Cornelia & John Sothoron, Samuel T. Wright
- Maria, the daughter & devisee of Clement Sewell Esq dec'd, was to receive £2,000 at age of 16 or at marriage. Her mother, the executrix, married John Sothoron in August of 1798, who applied thru Orphans Court in Queen Anne's Co for delivery to him of the entire estate, which was granted. Maria turned 16 in March 1800, applied to John Sothoron for her legacy, which she claims was refused. He admits to the above, noting that as a surety of the estate, was justly alarmed at extravagances of the executrix in the Summer & Fall of 1797, "...and at the prospects there were of her connecting herself with the defendant John Sothoron the man she afterwards unhappily married." He applied for control of the estate to protect it, but much of it had already been lost.
- Bond for £10,000 for Cornelia Sewell as administrator of the estate of Clement Sewell, to provide proper inventory and account, with James OBryan Sen. & Samuel Turbott as sureties; dated 8 May 1795.
- Bond for £300 for Samuel Turbott Wright & William Clayton Bordley of Queen Anne's Co, bound unto John Sotheron & Cornelia his wife, in that the former's legacy had been satisfied. Dated 9 March 1798. (Chancery Papers 4846, Queen Anne's Co., MD, 1800.12.04)

** Biography (Papenfuse 2:573)

MARBURY, LUKE (ca. 1745-1809). BORN: ca. 1745; only child surviving to adulthood. NATIVE: third generation. RESIDED: in Piscataway-Hynson Hundred, Prince George's County, 1796; "Wheeler's Hope," Prince George's County, 1801. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Luke Marbury (1710-1758), Gent., of Prince George's County, a tobacco inspector at Piscataway and a justice of the peace of Prince George's County, 1743-1751. MOTHER: Elizabeth, daughter of William Beanes (1684-1765) and wife Elizabeth Bradley (1684-1773) of Upper Marlborough, Prince George's County. ADDITIONAL COMMENT: In 1761, Luke Marbury's father's estate was to be divided between his widow and three children. There is no evidence of Luke's siblings after this date. It is presumed they died soon thereafter leaving him as the surviving heir. MARRIED ca. 1770 his first cousin Elizabeth (ca. 1747-?), daughter of William Beanes (?-1801) of Prince George's County and wife Mary Bowie (1726-ca. 1794). Elizabeth was the niece of William Bowie (1721-1791). Her brothers were Dr. Colmore (?-1831), a physician; Maj. William Bradley (1775-1818), who married in 1809 Eleanor Brown; Col. Her first cousins were Walter Bowie (1748-1810); Robert Bowie (ca. 1750-1818). ADDITIONAL COMMENT: Dr. William Beanes, Marbury's brother-in-law, was taken prisoner shortly after the successful British assault on Washington, D.C., in August 1814. Francis Scott Key, a friend of Beanes, went on board the British ship in the Chesapeake Bay where Beanes was being held in an effort to secure his release. It is from this vantage point that Key witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry on the night of September 13-14, 1814, that inspired him to write the "Star-Spangled Banner." CHILDREN. SON: William (1771-?), who served two terms in the Maryland House of Delegates and who married Jane Contee (1780-?), daughter of John Read Magruder and wife Barbara Contee. Her grandfather was Alexander Contee (ca. 1691-1740).
