John Hanson Briscoe, son of Dr. John Hanson Briscoe (1732-1796), and Elizabeth Attaway Bond (1768-1816) born December 10, 1789 at Laureentum, near Chaptico in St. Mary's Co., MD. - After graduating from Charlotte Hall Military Academy at Charlotte Hall, St. Mary's Co., he earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1811. - Dr. Briscoe was commissioned a Captain in the War of 1812, serving in Sterett's Brigade of the Maryland Militia. He was Judge of the Orphan's Court in both St. Mary's Co. and in Baltimore City. - The St. Mary's Co. Tax List of 1821 list him as owning Harrow Hills, 593 acres, four slaves and worth $2514. - The Baltimore City Directory of 1832 shows him living at 6 St. Paul Street. - Dr. Briscoe married May 27, 1823 Mary Hall Key, daughter of Philip Key and Sophia Hall of Gravely Hills, St. Mary's Co. in Chaptico. They had a daughter, Sophia Key Briscoe. - He was appointed Naval Officer of Baltimore under President Pierce and held that position until his death on September 21, 1855. References: -- Cordell, E. Educated at Charlotte Hall (?), M.D. University of Pennsylvania, 1811; Captain, Sterrett's Brigade, Maryland Militia, War of 1812; practiced in St. Mary's County for twenty years, removing to Baltimore about 1836; Judge of the Orphans' Court, Baltimore; Naval Officer of Baltimore, under President Pierce. Died at Baltimore, September, 1855.
