** Charles and Lavinia Anderson and Their Children (Cook(2)* pp 31-33)

- In May of 1847, a month after Richard S. Anderson died, his son Charles Henry Anderson married Lavinia Cordelia Brown. The marriage is among those recorded by the Clerk of the Circuit Court for Montgomcry County. Charles and Lavinia appear with their children in the 1850 and1860 censuses of Montgomery County, but Lavinia must have died some time between the birth of Lucinda in1866 and the date of the1870 census, By 1870 their daughter, Mary Fortunate, at 21 was "keeping house" for Charles and the younger children,
- Charles' son Ri.chard Sothern Anderson was located in the1880 census living with his uncles Daniel and Michael Browe. The whereabouts of Charles and the remainder of his family at the time remains a mystery despite the fact that the 1880 census is indexed, as he is listed neither in Montgomery County nor the District of Columbia.
- ... land records, as mentioned earlier, show that Charles and his children in1893 divided into five equal portions the land that Robert Brown had given to Lavinia, In 1895 the Montgomery County Sentinel reported Charles' death.
- Richard Sothern Anderson's daughter, Norma Amelia, was born in1896 and never knew her grandparents or their oldest daughter, Mary Fortunate, who died in1893. She did remember, though, the house that had belonged to Charles and Lavinia, Their next oldest daughter, also named Lavinia, had married John S.Bryan and they lived in the house, Lavinia having inherited that portion of the land. It was a large house with a long porch across the front and a big light hanging down over the porch and stood formaly years on the west side of what is now Veirs Mill Road between University Boulevard and Newport Hill Road,
- When Norma was small, her aunt Lavinia Bryan used to come to visit. Norma was impressed with how elegant her buggy was, with fringe on top, two beautiful horses pulling it and two greyhounds running along side. The 1900 census shows the Bryans living on the home place, with the son Edward at 28 a farmer, Norma remembered two boys, but not the name of the second, The Bryans sold their land and moved to California, Things must have not gone well. Years later Norma's father, Richard Sothern, received a letter saying that Lavinia Bryan had died and asking him to send money to bury her, which he did,
- Richard Sothern Anderson, the oldest son of Charles and Lavinia, married Virginia Corrick. He brought his wife to the home farm to live with his father and siblings, The story was that he was always giving money to his sisters, to which Virginia did not take kindly, and she furthermore wanted her own house, no matter how small. She finally and simply left Richard and refused to come back until he agreed to build a house for her, which took care of the problem and they resumed a long and happy marriage,
- Richard Sothern was a dairy farmer and when he died of influenza in1921 there was a sale of his personal property, The sale was duly reported in connection with the administration of his estate and all the items listed, with who bought them and how much they paid. Joseph Fricks bought 1 cow for $76, a 2-horse wagon for $65 and 2 milk cans for 30 cents. There were several other cows sold, calves, horses and hogs, bushles of corn, hay, a buggy and a 2-horse plow, and some cow bells for 5 cents.
- Two or three years after Richard Sothern, another son was born to Charles and Lavinia, who was given his father's name, Charles Henry Anderson. As was usual at the time, there was no designation of "Jr." or "Sr." The young Charles Henry was apparently dissatisfied with life at home when was about 18 or 20 years old, for some reason. He left and was never heard from again.
- Josephine Chunn Anderson was the fifth chid of Charles and Lavinia. Her unusual middle name was a family name - there were Chunns in Montgomery County and in Charles County - but their connection to the Anderson family is not known. Josephine, whose nickname was "Josie," married George Francis Davis. They rented out their place in Kensington that Josie had inherited - in 1900 it was rented to a Joseph Davis - and bought a hotel in Mount Holly, Virginia. Norma used to go there with her sister and girl friends to visit. It had a big dance floor and Norman would play the piano for them and have a wonderful time. Later Josie and George sold the hotel and came back to live in Kensington. When Norma went to see them in Kensington, she liked to play records on the phonograph they had with "a big horn on top." Aunt Josie was a large woman, but had very tiny feey, size 3 in shoes, and she always wore high heels, which made her feet look even smaller.
- John Wallace Anderson, born in 1859, was known as Wallace. The July 30, 1897 issue of the Montgomery County Sentinel carried his obituary:
--- "John Wallace Anderson, aged 36 years, son of the late Chas. H. Anderson of Wheaton, died at his residence near Kensington on Tuesday of last week. The family of which the deceased was a member has been identified with this county for many gnerations and the name figures largely in the early history of Maryland. His death resulted from typhoid fever, after an illness of three weeks. He leaves a widow who is the daughter of the late Maurice M. Scott of Texas, having been married in October last."
- Mary Wallace Anderson was born just four days after the death of her father. Cecelia, Wallace's widow, re-married in 1901. The "Thomas Marsh" listed in the 1900 census as a "servant' in the household of Cecelia Anderson, a category covering any employee and most likely a farm laborer, becane the new husband. They had several daughters.
- Norma particularly remembers one of the daughters, Ceci. Charles and Lavinia had their children baptized in the Catholic Church, the Browns' faith. Although Virginia was a Methodist, she and Richard Sothern mght have raised their children Catholic, she used to say, except that Ceci pushed her so. Ceci was a lovely girl but every Sunday she would stop by in her buggy and try to get Virginia to let her take the children to church with her. Virginia finally had enough of it and said, "When the children are ready to go to church, I'll take them to the Methodist Church. Norma and her sister and brother thus became Methodist.
- The records do not show that Wallace and Cecelia's caughter was named Mary "Wallace," but Norma used to play with her sometimes and remembers that they used to call her that, her full name. She developed a complication of pregnancy and died at 33.
- Lucinda, who was usually "Lucy," was the youngest child of Charles and Lavinia. She married George Minos Bibb Brown, the son of Thomas J. Brown, son of Robert Brown. "Bibb" Brown, as he was called, had been named after his mother's father, a judge in Montgomery County. The records show that the marriage of Lucinda & George in 1895 by Rev. C.O. Rosensteel required a dispensation from the Catholic Church because of "consanguity in the second degree" - they were first cousins.
- Lucy and Bibb had two sons: George Minos Brown, called "Minos" and Henry Ashton Brown, called "Ashton." Norma remembers Ashton being, as she put it, "not quite right" and he died when he was only 28 years old.
- Lucy was thrown form a horse when she ws a young woman and was paralyzed from the waist down. She gave piano lessons and had taught Minos to play. He was quite good. When Lucy died, Norma remebers, Bibb Brown seemed to go to pieces and went around giving things away to everyone except his sons. Bibb Brown was a lawyer in Rockville at one time. The census records list his occupation as attorney at law in 1900 and then ten years later, in 1910, as street car conductor. According to his granddaughter, Lucy Banting, after a controversial case in which he represented a black family, "they took away his license to practice law." She also said that there was a history of diabetes in Lucy's family and Lucy was said to have become blind. When Bibb died he left his son one dollar and everything else went to the Catholic Church.

Lavinia and Charles Anderson (Cook(2)*, pp. 16-17)
- By 1854 Robert Brown was 69 years old and he began giving his lands to his children, A deed dated July 3, 1854,, between Robert Brown and Lavinia C. Anderson "wife of Charles H. Anderson", transfers 170 acres to Lavinia "in consideration of the natural love and affection whch the saidRobert Brown bears to his daughter, said Lavinia C. Anderson".
--- "Beginning at an old white oak stump standing at the junction of the Newport hill road with the Turnpike road from Rockville to Washington City ... (to) the seven hundred perch line between a tract of Land called .Josephs Park and a tract called Hermitage then ••• easterly to a large ditch then with the eastern edge of said ditch ••• to the aforesaid turnpike road • • • westernly to the place of beginning".
- This is the land that came to be known as the "Anderson land", which in 1893, after Lavinia had died, Charles divided among their children. Richard Sothern Anderson received one-fifth of it, "twenty six and a half acres and twenty two square perches" and this, in turn, was divided among his children.
- A few months after Robert Brown gave Lavinia 170 acres, Charles H. Anderson purchased 70 acres from him for $1,500. This land, it is clear from the deed, lay along the Rockville to Washington City turnpike and was the property between the "large ditch" of Lavinia's deed and Old Bladensburg Road, To use present street names, the two deeds covered the western side of Veirs Mill Road from Newport Hill Road to University Boulevard, all of Robert Brown's land in the Hermitage tract.
- On the same day Robert Bro•m signed the deed selling the 70 acres to Charles, October 21, 1854, Charles and Lavinia executed a mortgage agreeing to make annual payments to Robert Brown. The mortgage was not recorded until February 22, 1856, and on February 25, 1857, Robert Brown filed a bill in equity to foreclose the mortgage, The case was kept open for several years, finally being dismissed in January of 1864, the same month that Charles and Lavinia sold the land to Willian A. Wroe of "Washington County in the District of Columbia"... There were only 69 1.2 acres then,. since "39 square perches of land" had been sold in 1860 to the Commissioners of Public Schools of Montgomery County... An 1869 map of Montgomery County show a schoolhouse at the corner of the Rockville-Washington pike and Old Bladensburg.
