Bartleson Barbara
Addes: 22 DEC 2010
Person ID: 4419

Bay protector Cummings dies.
- When Barbara Bartleson Cummings' beloved Estero Bay was threatened by a massive development proposal in the 1970s, she fought to save it.
- "Back when everything was for sale, she thought our heritage shouldn't be sold, particularly our natu-ral heritage," said Wayne Daltry, former executive director of the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council.
- The development was stopped.
- Cummings, a member of a prominent Lee County family, died May 24 at age 74.
- Her father, Dr. Fred Bartleson, was a. well-known Fort Myers physi-cian. Her mother, Eleanor Woolslair Bartleson, belonged to the pioneer Woolslair family.
- Cummings was born in Fort Myers in 1935, before Cape Coral was created or a bridge to Sanibel Island was built.
- In the 1970s, an Atlanta developer proposed an Estero. Bay project dubbed the Estuaries, a 5,280-acre colossus with 1,731 units that could house up to 20,000 people.
- "She loved her world -her Fort Myers world, her world where she grew up as a child -and she wanted to protect it for our future," said longtime friend Mike Perry.
- Cummings was also active with the Southwest Florida Historical Society and was a board member for the Southwest Florida Museum of History.
- Genevieve Bowen, the historical society presi-dent, said Cummings was instrumental in acquiring the society's building and moving it to its current location, at the Lee County Alliance for the Arts on McGregor Boulevard.
- "Pretty much she picked it up and put it on her shoulders and carried it out there," Bowen said.
- Cummings is survived by three daughters, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
- A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Satur-day, June 26, at First Pres-byterian Church in Fort Myers.
