Dorothy Warner Bowie of Hilton Head Island died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at her home at The Cypress. She was 87.
Mrs. Bowie was a devoted wife and mother who moved to Hilton Head in 1971, a different time when there was one grocery story and no traffic signals. She and her husband, J. Tyler Bowie, built homes at Sea Pines Plantation and Long Cove before Mrs. Bowie moved to the Cypress in 2000. Mr. Bowie died in 1999.
She was born in Ann Arbor, Mich., in 1920, the daughter of Dorothy and Harley Warner, and grew up in Farmington, Mich. She graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Va., where she met and dated her future husband, in 1943. They married in 1944. The couple lived in Washington, D.C., for 27 years and raised three children. They vacationed at Hilton Head in the 1960s before moving to Sea Pines 36 years ago.
Mrs. Bowie was a long-time volunteer at Hilton Head Hospital and the Mental Health Center. She is survived by two daughters, Susan B. Reynolds of Charleston, S.C., and Mary S. Bowie of Orlando, Fla.; a son, John F.M. Bowie II of Morristown, N.J.; a brother, Frederick M. Warner of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and two grandchildren, Rebecca Lee Reynolds of Charleston, S.C., and Charles M. Reynolds of Philadelphia, Pa.
Graveside services are private. Memorial contributions may be made to Deep Well, P.O. Box 5543, Hilton Head Island, SC 29938. The Island Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
