Samuel J. Smith, 63, an accountant in Silver Spring for more than 25 years, died of cancer Saturday at his Rockville home. He operated his own firm, Samuel J. Smith & Co., until retiring in June. A director of the Silver Spring Lions Club, he had served as treasurer and vice president of the local chapter. Mr. Smith was born in Mount Airy, N.C., and moved to Washington at an early age. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees at Benjamin Franklin University. He belong to Manor Co. Club and had served as its treasurer at one time. He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Silver Spring and its choir. Survivors include his wife, Doris, and a daughter, Paula L. both of the home; a son, Richard K; his mother, Minnie R. Sothoron, of Adelphi, and two sisters, Jessie May Dunn, of Hyattsville, and Rachel Swift, of Hallandaie, Fla. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Lions Eye Bank in Washington or the American Cancer Society in Silver Spring.
