Then she asked the police to communicate with the authorities of Martinsville, where her husband was employed since he left this city two months ago. Inspector Boardman's inquiry resulted in the the news that Cross had been murdered.

-----
Easton, Md., March 22 - John Dean was held Saturday, charged with aiding and abetting an illegal operation on his wife, in Carolina county, about three years ago. He was taken to Denton jail. Dr. J. B. Merritt, of Easton, is charged with having performed the operation, and a warrant was also sworn out for his arrest. Deputy Sheriff Gannon as yet has been unable to find the doctor, and it is generally supposed he has left town.
- Dr. Merritt is now out on $5,000 bail on a charge of having performed an illegal operation upon Miss Emerald Sothoron, of Easton, about a year ago, which caused her death. (Evening Times {Cumberland, MD}:8, Reported 1909.03.22)

DR. MERRITT ON TRIAL.
-------
Easton Physician, After Forfeiting Bail, Returns to Face Charges.
Special to The Washington Post.
Easton, Md., Nov. 26-Dr. James B. Merritt appeared in court here today to answer to the charge of having performed an unlawful operation upon Emerald L. Sothoron, the 18 year-old daughter of Thomas J. Sothoron, of this city. Dr. Merritt's presence was a surprise, for since November 24, 1908, when he was indicted, his whereabouts were unknown to the officers of the law. His bail of $5,000 had been forfeited when he failed to appear at the May term of court.
- Some of the evidence so far seems damaging to Dr. Merritt, especially that of the dead girl's mother, who said on the stand that she saw him perform the operation, and after the removal of the child ordered her to burn the infant.
- Dr. Merritt's case is regarded as most sensational in many respects. He had been practicing medicine here for more than 23 years. The sheriff of Caroline county is here with a warrant for Dr. Merritt on a similar charge. (Washington Post :3, Reported 1909.11.27)

DR. MERRITT NOT GUILTY.
-------
Special to The Washington Post.
Easton, Md., Nov. 27.-The trial of Dr. James R. Merritt, charged with performing an unlawful operation on Emerald Sothoron, in circuit court here, was brought to a close today, the jury, after being out about three minutes, rendering a verdict of not guilty.
- Notwithstanding the order of the court that no demonstration should be made, Dr. Merritt, his wife, daughter, and son were congratulated by their many friends. (Washington Post :14, Reported 1909.11.28)
