Overton Willis [Male] b. BEF 1767 - d. BEF 25 MAR 1835 Spotsylvania Co., VA
Person ID: 4947

Susanna Tureman, dau. of Ignatius Tureman & Eleanor Medley, b. abt 1775 in Culpeper Co., VA, d. aft 1850, probably in Orange Co., VA; m. on 20 Dec 1791 in Culpeper Co., VA, Willis Overton. (Jones(2)*)

Susannah Overton m. Willis Overton; two of children were Susannah & William J. Overton. (Jones*)

Willis Overton & Susanna Sturman were married 20 Dec 1791 in Culpeper Co., VA by minister George Eve (Baptist). (Vogt(3)*:83)

** From Jones(1)*

Willis3 Overton, Sr., apparently born [to Obediah Overton & presumably Frances] before 1767 (in order to be older than Willis, Jr., who married in 1788); wed Susanah Tureman, 20 December 1791, in Culpeper County;(46) died in Spotsylvania prior to 25 March 1835, when his will was admitted to probate.(47) He paid personal-property taxes in Orange County in 1790 and 1791; in Madison County between 1793 and 1795; and in Spotsylvania County from 1798 until 1835, when his estate was listed.

The will and sundry probate papers created for Willis's estate name his children and provide many details concerning them. Those named are (1) Elizabeth Overton, who married James Jones before 1830; (2) Lucy Overton, who married Proctor Biggers in Orange County on 18 January 1822; (3) Gilchrist Overton, who settled in Greene County, Georgia; (4) Thomas Overton, who also removed to Greene County, Georgia; (5) Mildred Overton, who married her apparent first cousin, George Overton, before 1830 and removed to Hardeman County, Tennessee; (6) Nancy Overton, who married Richard Richards, Jr., on 20 October 1826; (7) Tureman C. Overton; (8) William Jackson Overton, who settled in Taliaferro County, Georgia; (9) Catharine Overton, who married Robert Richards before 1847; and (10) Susanna Overton, who married William Chowning before 1839. Many of the descendants of Willis Overton, Sr., are well documented in Boddie's Historical Southern Families.(48)
