ILL, HE KILLS HIMSELF
----------
J. T. Sothoron, Lawyer, Fires Bullet Into Temple.
----------
WOMAN FINDS HIM A CORPSE
----------
Prominent Member of District Bar and Scion of Old Maryland Family, Leaves No Explanation of Deed, but Brother, a Doctor, Tells of Nervous Breakdown. Phone Call Reveals Tragedy.
------------
James Thomas Sothoron, 46 years old, a well-known lawyer, who practiced in Washington for 25 years, committed suicide early yesterday by shooting himself in the right temple with a .32-caliber revolver. He had been suffering from nervous exhaustion for six months or more, according to Dr. Elmer Sothoron, his brother. He left no note of explanation or farewell.
- The body was discovered by the woman who conducts the boarding house at 901 Twenty-first street northwest, where Sothoron lived. Early in the afternoon Dr. Sothoron telephoned the house, and the woman went upstairs to call his brother to the phone. Receiving no response to her knock, she supposed Mr. Sothoron had gone out, and so she told the doctor. Then she wrote a memorandum of the call for the lawyer, and was about to pin it on his door when she noticed the key was in the lock on the outside. That impelled her to open the door.
Sothoron Dead on the Bed.
- She discovered the body on the bed. Sothoron lay on his back in his night clothing, and the revolver was still clutched in his right hand.
- The woman at once notified Dr. Sothoron, who promptly informed the police, so that Deputy Coroner White was on hand almost immediately. A search of the dead man's effects failed to reveal anything he might have left by way of explanation, and Dr. Sothoron had to conclude that it was his brother's illness that drove him to suicide. Deputy Coroner White issued a certificate of suicide.
His Briefs Used in Textbooks.
- Mr. Sothoron was a member of one of the most prominent families of St. Mary's county, Md., and his father, the late Dr. James T. Sothoron, was widely known in Washington where he practiced for many years. Mr. Sothoron attended Georgetown University, and was graduated from the National Law School in 1887, taking up practice in this city at once. He gained prominence in several important cases in which he was successful, and many of his briefs have been published in textbooks in use in law schools all over the United States. Besides his brother, he leaves a married sister, who lives in Washington. (Washington Post :1, Reported 1913.07.24)
