Comrade and Father Unable to Rescue Henry Smoot, 16, When He Steps in Sand Hole in Eastern Branch. - Three young men lost their lives in the Potomac yesterday afternoon. Henry Smoot, 16 years old, was drowned while bathing in the Eastern Branch early in the afternoon. Two unidentified young men were drowned near Big Rock when their canoe capsized in the main channel of the river near the Virginia shore above the Aqueduct bridge. Neither of the three bodies has been recovered up to a late hour last night, although two crews of the harbor police were out all afternoon and late into the night dragging the river. - Smoot, accompanied by three playmates and his father, Daniel Smoot, of 209 Fourteenth street northeast, went to the Eastern Branch of the Potomac yesterday aftenoon for a swim. They entered the water at Twenty-seventh and A streets northeast. Accompanying young Smoot were Patrick Hurley, 216 Fourteenth street northeast; Harold Harrison, 1410 C street northeast, and George Kelser, 231 Fourteenth street northeast. --- Lost in Sand Hole. - It was 3:30 o'clock when the boys, paddling 40 yards from the bank, saw young Smoot throw up his hands and cry for help. He could not swim, and had walked into a sand hole in the bottom of the river, where the water was over his head. Hurley and Harrison, not being able to swim, could give no assistance, but young Kelsey went to the aid of his friend. In the meantime Smoot's father entered the water and made effort to save his son. Every effort to locate the boy who had sunk was unsuccessful. - Young Smoot was for a number of years a member of the choir of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the Nativity, Fourteenth and A streets southeast, of which the Rev. Enoch M. Thompson is the rector. The boy was crucifer of the church, carrying the cross at the head of the surpliced choir. - (Balance of story relates to the canoeists) (Washington Post :1, 21 June 1915)
