** Obituary (from The Hickman County News, furnished by Broome*)
"CENTREVILLE (sic), TENNESSEE, THURSDAY, JANUARY 3, 1918.
JNO. P. BROME (sic) HEARS FINAL CALL
Wearer of Gray Joins Silent Bivouac of the Dead. Follower of Wheeler.
- Another Confederate veteran has passed over the river to join his comrades resting "under the shade of the trees." - At the Centreville Hospital, where he had been confined for several weeks, after a long illness of Bright's disease, Jno. P. Broome died Thursday, Dec. 27, 1917. - Deceased was born in Centreville, Tenn., March 15, 1843. His life had rounded out more than the alloted (sic) span. Mr. Broome enlisted in the Confederate army Dec. 14, 1862, Robert Whitson's Co. D, 9th battallion (sic), Tennessee cavalry, under Major J. N. Akin, and his regiment was attached most of the time to Gen. Wheeler's command. He was paroled at Charlotte, N. C., May 3, 1865. He participated in many hard fights, was in battle of Shiloh and second battle of Ft. Donaldson and Thompson Station. - It is said that he was near Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston when he was mortally wounded, and assisted the General from his horse. He bravely bore his part, whether on the march, in camp, or on the battlefield, ever ready to share the burdens of a soldier's lot. He was a great lover of the South and her history, coupled with a reverent affection for her traditions, and his love for his comrades in gray who fought in the struggle with him were some of his chief traits of character, and attended reunions with enthusiastic enjoyment. - On his return home he engaged in farming. Later he with his brother, Samuel T. Broome, entered the retail grocery business in Centreville which they followed for several years. They sold their store and he returned to the farm in Shipp's Bend near Centreville, where he lived until he died. He was married in 1870 to Miss Matilda Clagett, daughter of the late Horatio Clagett. His wife preceded him to the grave in 1913. The following children survive him: Stanley C. and Thomas Broome, of Centrevile (sic); T. H. Broome, of McMinnville; Mrs. P. A. Heaton, of San Antonio, Tex., and Mrs. Annie L. Hutcherson, of Crystal Springs, Miss. Early in life he joined the M. E. Church. The funeral was conducted at the residence of his brother-in-law, Robert M. Clagett, at 3 o'clock p. m., Dec. 27th, by Rev. J. S. Rice. He joined the United Order of the Golden Cross, and received the degree of the Golden Star on the 26th day of August, 1890. After the funeral a platoon of Confederate soldiers as honorary pall bearers led by Patrick Dowdy, with flag draped with black, preceded the hearse to the local cemetery. The active pall bearers were the sons of Confederate soldiers as follows: Harry and Douglas Dean, Connor Bates, Bernard Norris, T. M. and Dean Hddleston (sic).
"Rest, comrade, rest and sleep! The thoughts of men shall be As sentinels to keep Your rest from danger free.
Your silent tents of green We deck with fragrant flowers. Yours has the suffering been; The memory shall be ours.""
