Henry Tayloe Compton, Jr, 87, of Southern Pines passed away peacefully at his residence on October 15, 2012.He was born on June 5, 1925 to the late Sarah Walthour and Henry Tayloe Compton, Sr. in Savannah, Georgia. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 25 years, Ann Jacobs Compton in 2008 and also by his daughter Shawn Lee Compton.Tayloe was a graduate of the business school at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Shortly after graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy. After his service he returned to Savannah where he was a successful banker. Away from work, he was an avid horseman, outdoorsman and family historian. He retired in 1979 and moved permanently to Southern Pines where he was able to enjoy the things that he loved most: working outdoors, foxhunting with the Moore County Hounds, and spending time with his family and friends. He truly loved helping with the Walthour Moss Foundation and will be remembered as the epitome of a true Southern gentleman.Tayloe was a wonderful father and he is survived by his daughters, Cameron Compton Sadler, Tayloe Bond Compton, and Randall Adams Compton; step-children, Ann Blaine Holland and James Grover Holland IV; granddaughter Summer Tayloe Coggins, and his constant canine companions Blaze and Raisin.A memorial graveside service will be held at the Hilltop Cemetery in Southern Pines, North Carolina at 3:00PM, Friday, October 19th.In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Walthour Moss Foundation at Post Office Box 978, Southern Pines, NC 28388 or FirstHealth Hospice Foundation 150 Applecross Road Pinehurst, NC 28374.Leave a Note of Remembrance.
