Anne Josephine Chelf, age 88, of Manassas, Virginia, formerly of Culpeper, Va., died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at Manassas Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A native of Culpeper, Commander Chelf was born November 5, 1919, daughter of the late, Dr. Hugh Tucker Chelf, Sr. and Mary Genevieve Payne Chelf. She was a retired United State Navy Commander where she served as a Nurse during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. She graduated from the University of Virginia Nursing School after completing two years at Farmville State Teachers College. She also attended the University of Pennsylvania. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Dr. Hugh Tucker Chelf, Jr. She is survived by her brother, Charles Fielding Chelf, of Manassas and her niece, Mary Jo Outland and husband, Joseph, of Manassas. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at Pierce Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas where funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday. - Born Sept. 27, 1928 in Savannah, Ga. to the late Key and Kat Compton, he graduated from St. Paul's Episcopal School in Baltimore, Md. and then graduated from the University of Virginia. He then served his country as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro and served as president of the Alumni Assn. at the University of Virginia. He was a past board member of the Greensboro Country Club and served on the Greensboro Sports Council.
- He is survived by his wife, Anne A. Compton of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Connie Compton of Roanoke, Va., Penn and Martha Compton of Wilmington, William and Cynthia Compton of Greensboro and Key and Susan Compton of Charlottesville, Va.; grandchildren, Thomas L. and Joseph A. Compton of Roanoke, Va., Penn S. Jr. and Kinsley B. Compton of Wilmington, William Compton Jr. of Greensboro and Key Compton Jr. of Charlottesville, Va.
- The family will receive friends at the residence.
