- Dividing the possessions of Zachariah Higgs
- When Zachariali Higgs died in 1900 and his things were being divided among his children, Robert KeneIm Higgs sald he would like to have the Minnie ball that injured his Dad in the arm during the Civil war. The Minnie ball had lain on the fireplace mantle as a souvenir since Zachariah had come home from the war. Robert asked if he could have it? When he was told he could, he picked it up and threw it in to the fireplace as hart as he could. He then
said" I have wanted to do that for a long time!" When asked why, "He said the War is over! All these reminders of the war only help us to remember the misery and heartbreak of it. So it is just best to put it behind us for good. Forget it and look to the future."
- Mary McGuire Daughter of Robert K. Higgs told me this story when Dad and 1 went to visit them June of 1980. She was then 84; she and her sister Carrie, took us out to the graveyard where her Higgs and Harrison Family were buried. The location is near Malvern, AR.
- Robert Kenelm Higgs would not let his daughters join the Daughters of the Confederacy for the same reason. (Bridges*)
