** Obituary (USGenWeb.com* - Barry Co., MO)
This obituary was written by his Granddaughter Nichole Phillips. It was published in the Springfield Newsleader and the Cassville Democrat. A different obituary may also be found in the archives of the Monett Times.
Hugh Monroe Higgs, age 88 years, died December 13th, 2001 in Cassville, Missouri after a long illness.
Hugh, the son of the late George Harvey and Elisabelle (Baker) Higgs was born May 2nd, 1913 in Wheaton, Missouri. One of nine children, Hugh is survived by one brother, Junior Harvey Higgs, of Exeter, Missouri.
Hugh was united in marriage to Miss Hazel Margaret Erwin, daughter of the late Judge and Ora Erwin on June 4th, 1932. Hugh and Hazel lived in Barry County most of their married lives and settled in Exeter, Missouri in 1948. This coming June would have marked their 70th wedding anniversary.
To this union four children were born, three sons and one daughter. Fred Harvey, died at five days of age, Hugh Darrell of Exeter, Missouri, Franklin Delano of Valley Center, Kansas, and Martha Jane of Springfield, Missouri. Ten grandchildren and eightteen great-grandchildren also survive him. One grandchild, Sherry Jane Burd, preceded him in death.
Hugh was saved on October 11th, 1932 and later answered God's call to preach the Gospel, being ordained on the 1st day of August 1948 by his peers at Calvary Baptist Church of Exeter, Missouri in which he was a member.
Hugh's faithful service to the Lord led him to preach in four states, throughout Barry County, and surrounding areas. Preaching revivals and seeing lost souls won to the Lord was Hugh's greatest joy. Hugh performed 131 weddings, 387 funerals, and countless baptisms. Hugh also pastored over 10 churches, several more than once. His guidance and example aided in leading his children and grandchildren to the Lord, with Hugh personally baptizing many. His character was a reflection of a lifelong relationship with Christ and his life made a lasting impression on those who knew him.
Services will be held
