** Doctors Gustavus Brown (Fresco(2)* : 46)
There were four Doctor Browns in St. Mary's and neighboring Charles County (MD) in the 1700's, three of them named Gustavus and all four related. Dr. Eugene F. Cordell, the medical historian read a paper before the Johns Hopkins Historical Society April 4, 1902, which was later published in the Johns Hopkins Hospital Bulletin in August - September 1902. The article is titled, "The Doctors Gustavus Brown of Lower Maryland". A copy was given to this writer for the St. Mary's Co. Historical Society. - First, there was the emigrant, Dr. Gustavus (1689-1762); second, his son, Dr. Gustavus Richard (1747-1804); and third, grandson Dr. Gustavus Brown (1744-1801) of Summerseat and fourth, another grandson, Dr. William Brown (1751-1792). - The third and fourth grew up in St. Mary's Co. All four men were educated at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. - The grandfather, Dr. Gustavus Brown was an emigrant. He wrote in his Common Prayer and Bible that he was born at Dalkeith, near Edinburgh, Scotland on April 10, 1689, that he came into Maryland in May 1708 (as a surgeon or surgeon's mate) on one of the King's vessels. While his ship lay at anchor in the Chesapeake Bay, he went ashore but before he could return, a severe storm arose which made it necessary for the ship to weigh anchor and put out to sea, so he was stranded. He settled in Charles County, MD. He married twice. By the first wife, he had a son, who became a minister and was the father of two St. Mary's Countians. The first Dr. Brown, the emigrant, by his second marriage, had Dr. Gustavus Richard Brown, 22 years younger than his brother, the minister. - Dr. Gustavus Brown (1744-1801), 3rd, was the grandson of Gustavus Brown, 1st, and although some years older, the nephew of Dr. Gustavus Richard Brown, 2nd. He was the son of Reverend Richard Brown and was born at Mainside near Edinburgh in 1744. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh for seven years and obtained his degree there in 1770. He came to America shortly after in company with Drs. Henry Reeder (uncle to the lady he afterward married). Lansdale, Ireland, and some say, Goldie, his fellow students at Edinburgh, and with them settled in St. Mary's Co. - In 1778, he is listed as serving as surgeon in the Upper Battalion of St. Mary's Co., Colonel John Allen Thomas, Commander. - In 1782, he attended his friend, Dr. Ireland, and the illness proving fatal, married his widow, Susanna, on August 19, 1788. Susanna Ireland was the only child of Colonel John Reeder and his wife, Dicanda Smith, an heiress, who built the fine home Summerseat. This is where Dr. Brown lived until his death. - Dr. Brown inherited from his father the Scotch estate, but as he left no descendants at his death, it went to Gustavus Richard Alexander Brown of William. The 1798 Tax Assessment shows Dr. Brown having a house valued at $700, 1138 acres and 32 slaves (2 disabled), total value of $4,908 in Upper Newtown Hundred. There have been as many as three houses built on this site. The present house can be seen on an elevation in a field on the west side of Route 235 (Old Three Notch Road) about three miles north of Hollywood. - Dr. Brown had no children. His wife, Susanna Reeder Ireland Brown had one child, Dicanda Ireland, who married Clement Dorsey. The estate descended through the families of Costigan and Dorsey. From about 1850 until about 1916, four Costigan sisters operated the farm and maintained a very fine classical Finishing Academy for young ladies. - In the late evening of December 13, 1799, a horseman, travel-stained and excited, eached Summerseat bearing a summons from his uncle, Dr. Gustavus Richard Brown to attend the Father of our Country, George Washington, at Mount Vernon, n consultation with his uncle, and Doctors Craig and Elisha Cullen Dick. Dr. Brown immediately mounted his horse and hastened, but when he reached the ferry probably at Fort Washington), he was told of Washington's death and turned back. 3eorge Washington had been riding horseback all day in a cold ran overseeing his plantation. He awoke between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. with difficulty in breathing and wallowing. The three physicians attending him told the newspapers that he died of )neumonia, although they treated him for quinsy. The youngest, Dr. Dick of Alexandria, recommended a tracheotomy, an operation which had never been )performed in America but the other two doctors decided that Washington might die A the operation. The patient died within 21 hours. After recent detailed study, it has been concluded that Washington died of suffocation, caused by the swelling of the lid-like structure at the entrance of the larynx. - Dr. Gustavus Brown died at Summerseat. He was buried in the Reeder burial ground at Westfield also called the Dixon Farm on Sandgates Road between Summerseat and the Patuxent River. His tombstone, still standing, reads: "Gustavus Brown, M.D., Native of Maiden Side, Scotland, died July 3, 1801, aged 56 years." - References: - Cordell, Eugene F., "The Doctors Gustavus Brown of Lower Maryland".
