** Shooting incident
BOY SHOOTS ANOTHER ------- Asserts He Was Tormented by Throwing of Stones. ------- IS UNCONCERNED BY ARREST ------- Lindon L. Haddox, Sixteen Years Old, and Two Companions Locked Up at Alexandria Because Former Fired Gun Into Arms and Side of Justus Schneider. ------- WASHINGTON POST BUREAU, 621 King Street, Alexandria, Va. - Linden L. Haddox, sixteen years of age, is locked up at the police station on a charge of maliciously shooting Justus Schneider, about thirteen years of age, a son of Frederick H. Schneider, who resides at 511 Queen Street. Milton Elliott, fifteen years of age, and his brother, Malcolm Elliott, about twenty years of age, are also locked up on a charge of being accessories to the shooting. - The shooting occurred about 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, while Haddox and the two Elliotts were in a boat off the Queen street dock. Haddox was about seventy yards from the wharf, when he fired a double-barrel shotgun, the charge which was bird shot, entering Schneider's left side and arm. The wounded boy was conveyed to his parents' home, 511 Queen street, and Dr. M. W. O'Brien attended him. It is not thought Schneider's injuries are of a serious nature. If Schneider is sufficiently well, the accused boys will be given a hearing in Police Court this morning. Haddox Describes Shooting. - Yound Haddox last night said he and the two Elliotts had embarked in a small batteau for a ride, when they were accosted by Schneider and a large number of other youths, who, he declares, threw stones and sticks at his party. Haddox asserts that his tormentors were so persistent that he returned to the wharf and disembarked, went to his home, 210 North Fairfax street, with his companions, climbed into a rear window of his home during the absence of his parents, and obtained his father's gun. Upon returning to the wharf he again went into his boat and was, he asserts, again molested by yound Schneider and others, and fired the gun. Following the shooting, he says, he rowed rapidly to the other side of the river, and, after hiding his gun, returned on the ferry steamer with his companions, about 6:30 o'clock last night. - Haddox was arrested by Lieut. Bettis. Chief Goods arrested Malcolm Elliott, and Milton Elliott was taken into custody by Policemen Knight and Garvey. Haddox appears to be but little concerned over the case. (Washington Post :3, Reported 1907.10.07)
Due to the inability of the complainant to appear in court, the case of Linden L. Haddox was postponed. Malcolm & Milton Elliott were released. (Washington Post :5, 1907.10.07, Reported 1907.10.08)
SENT TO REFORM SCHOOL ------- Linden Haddox Sentenced for Shooting Justus Schneider. - Police Justice Caton yesterday sentenced Linden L. Haddox, sixteen years old, to two years in the State Reform School, for shooting and seriously wounding a boy named Justus Schneider with a shotgun October 6. - It appeared from the evidence that Haddox and some companions were in a boat and that Schneider and several companions annoyed them by throwing rocks into the water. Haddox went ashore and procured his father's shotgun, returned to the boat, and then fired at Schneider. (Washington Post :5, Alexandria, VA, Reported 1907.10.18)
Convicted Boy Gets Mercy. - Police Justice Caton announced yesterday that arrangements had been made to place Lindon Haddox on a farm in Rappahannock Co. instead of sending him to the reform school for two years in accordance with the sentence imposed upon the lad Thursday, when he was found guilt of shooting Justus Schneider, another boy, with a shotgun.
