- Philip J. Bartleson was born in Campbell County, KY on 10/20/1837. In 1840 his father moved to Wheeling WV where he purchased with James E. Wharton the "Daily Times and Gazette", a Whig journal. Philip learned the printing trade. He had 3 brothers: Charles & Frederick were older and both also learned the trade; William was younger, started to California with the "49ers", and died of illness aboard ship.
- Frederick became a lawyer and settled in Joliet, IL. During the War he was a Colonel of the 100th Illinois infantry, and was killed at the battle of Kenesaw Mountain. Charles was a private in the 69th New York Infantry and was killed in the Wilderness.
- In 1858 Philip went with his father to Waynesburg, Greene Co, PA where they published the "Republican". In 1861 Philip married Miss Margaret, daughter of Jesse Rinehart Esq. of Waynesburg, and moved to Brooklyn, NY where he was employed on the "Times". He moved to Pittsburgh in 1866 and was employed on the "Gazette", where he stayed until moving to Greenville, this County, in 1869, whereupon he became a silent partner of Jacob Miller in the publication of the "Argus", but withdrew just before sale of the paper to W.F. Chalfont. In August 1871 he assumed management & editorship of the "Advertiser", where he remains. A conservative Republican, his only office has been 4 successive terms (12 years) as school director of Sharpsville.
