Woodman Mary E. [Female] b. ABT 1867 Pennsylvania

Person ID: 2105

Elizabeth Bartleson married Robert Ewer and were my mother's parents. Mother's name was Martha Ellen Ewer, who was your grand-mother's sister, Susan Ewer. Susan Ewer married your grand-father, John Wesley Bartleson. They were 1st. Cousins. (Woodman*)

The Mill our grand-father, Robert Ewer, owned, was purchased by my father at the time he was married to Martha Ellen Ewer. Your grand-father bought the home-stead and lived there for a time before moving to Newtown. He was a prosperous business man and I believe had accumulated a substantial sum of money, and retired from business.
- From Newtown they came to Langhorne for a few years, then moved to Churchville, from there they went to Virginia, sometime in the late ‘70's.
- There was agreat depression in business in the early seventies. Many fortunes were lost and, I presume, some of his investments were unsound.
- Uncle Wes, as we called him, came to see us before leaving for Va., and told my father and mother that they had invested Aunt Susan's legacy (that she had received from her father), in a farm in Va. Three hundred acres, I think, so the farm was probably in her name. I am confident you can find the date of purchase at your County Seat. (Woodman*)

See father's Notes for 1870 & 1880 Federal Census entries.

"In November, 1827, when politics began to warm up to a fever heat for the coming presidential election, an anti-Jackson newspaper was started at Doylestown by Francis B. Shaw, a member of the bar, and J.W. Bartleson. It was called the 'Bucks County Political Examiner,' with the motto: 'Our country, right or wrong,' at its head, and was noted for its bitterness and sprightliness. The Examiner survived the bitter contest of Jackson and Adams, 1828, and in the summer of 1829 was purchased by parties, and started as a Democratic newspaper in opposition to the 'Democrat.' The name was now changed to that of 'Bucks County Republican,' the first number appearing July 28, 1829, and was edited and printed by Alexander W. Campbell at two dollars a year. (Davis* :231)
