James T. Sothoron, physician, was born near Charlotte Hall, MD 7/9/1842. His father, John R. Sothoron, for a long time held a position in the war department at Washington. His wife was Elizabeth Catherine Canter, also from St. Mary's Co., also from a family which originated in England. His father moved the family from St. Mary's Co. to Washington, DC in 1843. Dr. Sothoron attended the grammar school and the Washington select school. He entered the academical department of the Georgetown University in 1858. In 1862 he became a tutor. In 1862 he matriculated in the medical department of Georgetown University, and continued his studies in medicine with Dr. Thomas Antisell, professor of physiology and military surgery. While a student he was appointed medical cadet of the U.S. Army, and served as such in Campbell Hospital in the District of Columbia, and graduated from his university in 1865. He was one of the original organizers of the Episcopal Church Orphanage of Washington and one of its trustees. He had an interest in the organization of St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church of Washington, of which he has been a vestryman 16 years and its treasurer since 1885. He was a petitioner for the organization of Garfield Hospital in Washington, a member of the Washington Microscopical Society, and a member of the third congress of American physicians and surgeons. He is a member and delegate of the central board of managers of the associated charities of DC and a member of the District Medical Society and Medical Association of the District of Columbia, and the American Medical Association. He was a delegate and member of the ninth international medical congress. His practice began in Washington in 1865. His success in obstetrics and diseases of children has given him reputation, and as a general practitioner he stands very high in his profession. (National Cyclopedia of American Biography*, 1897)

Sothoron of the City of Washington, towit, of the District of Columbia, being in perfect health of body and of sound mind and memory and understanding; but considering the uncertainity of this transitory life do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following, to wit:
- First, It is my will, and I do order, that all my just debts and funeral expenses be duly paid and satisfied as soon as conveniently can be done after my demise.
- Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto my beloved wife Elizabeth C. Sothoron all my estate, both personal and real of which I die seized and possessed.
- I nominate, constitute and appoint my beloved wife, Elizabeth C. Sothoron to be the sole executrix of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other wills, legacies and bequests by me heretofore made, and declaring his, and no other, to be my last will and testament.

Dr. Jas. T. Sothoron was buried at Glenwood Cemetery, Washington, DC on 29 September 1897 in a "walled & flagged” vault in Site 5-6 of Lot 58, Sec G, under Permit No. 115730. He was born in Maryland and was married. He died 9-27-1897 at the age of 55 years, 2 months, 18 days of Hemiplegia. Residence is given both as Hyattsville, MD and 1917 Eye St. NW. Undertaker was Jos. Dr. James Thomas Sothoron was born July 9, 1842 near Charlotte Hall, St. Mary's Co., MD.

He was educated at Washington Select School and at Georgetown College. He studied medicine under Dr. Thomas Antisell and received his medical degree from Georgetown Medical College in 1865. He practiced in Washington, DC.

During the War Between the States, he served as a medical cadet in the U. S. Army.

Dr. Sothoron married February 5, 1866, Elizabeth C. Canter, at All Faith Church near Charlotte Hall, St. Mary's Co., with Reverend Hoskins officiating. His wife was the daughter of Horatio Canter and Elizabeth R. Swann and was the sister of Dr. Gustavus Canter (1838-1867).

Their children, all born in Washington, DC were:
- James T. b, ca. 1867.
- Dr. Elmer H. Sothoron, b. October 13, 1868; received his B.A. in 1887 from Ashland College, Ohio and his M.D. in 1890 from Bellevue Hospital, New York City. He practiced in Washington, DC and was examining surgeon at the Bureau of Pensions.
- Nellie, b. ca. 1875.
- Bessie, b. ca. 1878.

Dr. James Thomas Sothoron was active in the Medical Societies and also on the Board of Managers of Associated Charities. For many years, he was vestryman and treasurer of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Washington, DC. He died September 27, 1897.

In the name of God, Amen; I, Elizabeth C. Sothoron of he City of Washington, District of Columbia, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, mindful of the uncertainties of life, and being desirous of settling my worldly affairs, do make, publish and declare this my last will and testament.
- First - I direct that all my just debts and personal expenses be paid and satisfied by my executor, hereinafter named.
- Second - I give, devise and bequeath unto my daughter Nellie K. Sothoron, or her heirs all my silver, china, Jewelry, furniture and household effects of every description.
- Third - I order and direct that all the rest, residual and remainder of my estate, real, personal and mixed, whatsoever and wheresoever, of which I may die seized and possessed, be converted into money within one year after my demise, and for that purpose I do hereby authorize and empower my said executor, hereinafter named, to sell and dispose of all my said real estate in such manner, at such times and upon such terms as to him shall seem to be for the best interest of my estate, and by proper deed or deeds, conveyances, or assurances in the law, to be duly executed, acknowledged and perfected, to grant, convey and assure the same to the purchaser or purchasers thereof, in fee simple, without liability on the part of the purchaser or purchasers thereof to see to the due application of the purchase money, and when the whole of my said residuary estate shall be disposed of as aforesaid then I will and direct that the proceeds of such sale or sales be disposed of by my said executor hereinafter named, in manner as follows:
- To my daughter Nellie K. Sothoron, or her heirs, I give, devise and bequeath the sum of ten thousand dollars ($10,000) of the proceeds of the aforesaid sale or sales.
- To my son Elmer H. Sothoron, or his heirs, I give, devise and bequeath one-half of what then remains of the proceeds of the aforesaid sale or sales.
- And the remainder to be invested by my said executor, hereinafter named, and the income therefrom paid to my son J. Thomas Sothoron, during his natural life; if the said income derived therefrom should not amount to the sum of six hundred dollars ($600) per annum, then a sufficient amount of the principal sum shall be used by my said executor to make up the sum of six hundred dollars ($600) per annum, which said income or sum of six hundred dollars ($600) is to be paid to my son J. Thomas Sothoron yearly by my said executor, hereinafter named; and at the death of my son J. Thomas Sothoron, the principal sum, if there be any remaining thereof, shall be divided share and share alike between my children Nellie K. Sothoron and Elmer H. Sothoron, or their heirs.
- Fourth - The rents collected between the time of my decease and the aforesaid sale or sales are to be applied to the payment of debts, interest, repairs, taxes and insurance, and the surplus, if any, to be divided equally between my children J. Thomas Sothoron, Elmer H. Sothoron and Nellie K. Sothoron, or their heirs.
- And lastly, I do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint Bates Warren of the City of Washington, District of Columbia, executor of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking and annulling all former wills and testaments, by me at any time heretofore made, ratifying and confirming this, and none other to be my last will and testament.
- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this third day of January, A.D., 1900.

- The marriage of Miss Nellie Key Sothoron, daughter of the late Dr. James T. Sothoron, to Foster Maynard, jr., formerly of Baltimore, took place yes­terday at noon at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Alfred Harding per­formed the ceremony, assisted by the Rev. L. J. Sothoron. No cards were is­sued for the ceremony. which was at­tended only by immediate relatives. The bride entered the church with her brothr. J. Thomas Sothoron. The groom joined the bride at the chancel, attended by his best man, Charles M. Watts. The bride wore a gown of blue voile. with hat to match.
- A wedding breakfast was served at the residence of Dr. Elmer Sothoron, 1921 I Street northwest, and immediately after Mr. and Mrs. Maynard left for Atlantic City and other points north. Upon their return they will reside at the Colonial apartments, Georgetown.
