Death Notices from the St. Mary's Beacon (1900-1930), p. 135. Thomas, James Walter - died at his home in Cumberland, MD, on Wed. October 13, aged 71 years. He had been in delcining health for several months. He was a promient lawyer and historian. He was twice married, His first wife was Susan Maxwell Smith, daughter of the late Dr. Samuel P. Smith. His second wife, who survived, was Sarah D. Avirett, widow of Col John W. Avirett. Mrs. Thomas was a native of Deep Falls, St. Mary's County, MD. He wrote several histories, his most important being, "Chronicles of Colonial Maryland." He is survived by his widow, a sister, Mrs. John G. H. Lilburn of St. Mary's City, Mrs.T. Roland Thomas of Baltimore and Warren Thomas of New York. (Oct. 22, 1926, col 1, p. 5). (Johnson, W.*)
